Our chickens are raised from day old chicks on New Country Organics Olive Oil feed.

When we say "As Nature Intended" we mean it, and this means doing better than organic... and the chickens seem to enjoy it as well

No pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, drugs, injections or anything unnatural of any kind is given to these chickens.

Efforts to remove all vegetable seed oils from the chickens diet and enviornment weren't easy. It's in most feed and even on the chick and chicken grit you'll find in stores.

As a result our chickens are 100% vegetable seed oil free.

They start their first two weeks in a custom, modular temperture controlled brooder box

Following that they finish their feathering in an attached chick run from the end of week 2 onward.

After they are moved to the chicken wagon, protected by electric fencing and provided food and water.

The wagon itself tends to move locations every week with both grass pasture and woodland available to the chickens.

Inside the wagon is their roosting bars, a deep litter/beding system, their oyster shell grit, water tank and drinkers, two small 7 watt red incandesant lights and their communal nesting area in the back.

While we intended to use food grade stainless steel for our water tanks and pipes, many complications have forced us to use food grade & potable water tanks, pipes and extras. The chickens seem to really like them at least.

Our rooster, Varr (from the old norse varr um sik - on one's guard) provides both early warning and conflict resolution between the hens.

We currently have Rhode Island Reds and two Golden Laced Wyandottes order from Chesapeake Farm and Hatchery.

Now why should you be interested in our pastured eggs?

Because they're actually pastured.

Look at the pastured eggs you can buy in the supermarket. They list the farm they came from.

Check that farms location on a map service, with a street view is even better. You won't find chickens on pasture.

Why?

The term "Pasture-Raised" is not regulated by the USDA. They define the term but do not require producers to submit documention proving compliance.

Certifed Humane does have a requirement for having 108 square feet per bird of pasture, but the loopholes are many and vast.

Thus we provide fresh eggs from truly pastured chickens who also have woodland access, which is appropriate for chickens are they are decended from jungle fowl.

Chickens need places for shade, to hide from predators and will happily enjoy making 1/3 of their diet grass and other plant matter.

We aim to provide as natural a habitat as we can while also streamlining our operations.

The red incandescent light is part of that.

Chickens don't see red light as sunlight and chickens cannot see in the dark. This provides both safey from injury and vision at night in the wagon.

They can also see ultraviolet light, why we don't use fluorescant or LED lights (as these appear as flicking and/or strobe lights to them)
